Have you ever thought to yourself, “What’s up with all of these Self Care Sunday Ideas? I mean, what is Self Care Sunday supposed to be anyway”?
Self Care Sunday is simply a day that highlights the importance of taking care of yourself. It actually doesn’t have to be Sunday, it can be any day at all.
But Sunday is generally a day of rest, so I think it’s become the go-to day to set up a self care routine.
I think as moms it’s all too common to forget about taking care of ourselves. Especially since we’re always so busy taking care of everyone else. We feel like we don’t have the time or energy to make self care a priority.

If I’ve said it before (and I know I have!) I’ll say it again: You have to take good care of yourself first if you want to be able to take the best care of everyone else.
Being a mom is hard! (Yes, I’ve said that before too!)
We do everything for our kids. We put them first and make sure their needs are always met, first and foremost.
And I wholeheartedly believe that’s the way it should be.
But I also believe that taking care of ourselves is not selfish, but an act of survival.
It’s not a luxury, it’s a necessity!
That’s why I hope these tips will help you create your own best version of Self Care Sunday.
Self Care Sunday Tips
Create a Self Care Sunday Routine
Taking care of yourself isn’t something you should only do once in awhile but should be done on a regular basis. Having regular habits that you partake in every week is a great way to make sure you are actually taking that time for yourself.
Self Care Sunday Routine Ideas
Plan ahead. When you make sure everyone in your family knows about your plans, there aren’t any surprises. If mama always goes for a walk, to the bookstore or gets her nails done every week, your family will recognize that’s your special time.
Choose the same time every week. If you have regular support that allows you to get away the same time every week, that’s wonderful. You can choose different ideas of what to do during your Sunday routine. The important thing is to do something, and make sure it’s something for yourself.
Practice makes perfect. The more you practice your self care routine, the more it becomes a habit. And before you know it, it will be as normal as getting dressed or going to the grocery store.
Include Free Activities
I think it’s important to make sure at least some of your self care hacks include free activities.
Why, you ask?
Because you don’t want to have to totally forgo self care due to of lack of money.
Listen, I totally get being on a budget and the need to save money, believe me.
But I also understand the importance of taking that time for yourself.
And there are many activities you can do that are totally 100% free.
- Go for a Walk
- Take a Bubble Bath
- Window Shop
- Read a Book
So even if you prefer self care activities that do require some cash, at least have a few in your arsenal that are free, even if they’re just as back-ups.

Start a Self Care Checklist
A Self Care Sunday checklist is a great idea. Maybe you have a bunch of things you’d really like to do, and obviously you can’t do them all at once.
Keep a list…kind of like a self care bucket list, if you will. Then each week as you do those things, check them off, and move on to your next self care adventure!
The neat thing about doing this with a wide variety of experiences is that you will find out what you like and what you don’t like. This makes it easier to set up your Self Care Routine once you discover what you really enjoy doing.

Take a Self Care Weekend
To be honest, this is something I’ve always wanted to do but have never done. I mean, hubby and I have gone away for the weekend without the kids a few times. But I haven’t done this alone.
Taking time for self care is something that many moms, myself included, struggle with. It’s not that we don’t know it’s important, I think most of us do. But it’s that constant struggle of feeling like we need to always be there with our family, or we might miss something.
I mean, there are other reasons too I’m sure. For some, it’s not financially possible to go away for the weekend. Or maybe you don’t have the help you need with your kids to make that possible. And if you fall in those categories, then this isn’t aimed at you.
But if you have the ability and the support to make a self care weekend possible, I urge you to go and do it! Take time for yourself. Let your mind wander and dream. Get out in the world and explore. Whatever makes you feel alive, do it!
I personally LOVE the beach. It’s where I feel alive, where I can dream and reflect on my life, my blessings and where I’m going. Taking a weekend to myself to visit and hang out near the ocean is definitely on my bucket list!
Choose a weekend that suits your taste. It can be anything from visiting a favorite spot to camping in the woods. Shopping and spa days or visiting distant friends or family. Whatever nurtures your soul, do that.
