Motherhood is hard, and many new moms aren’t really thinking about mom alone time ideas.
After all, you’ve just brought this new bundle of joy into the world. You want to spend as much time with your child as you can. The last thing you might be thinking about is leaving him (or her).
Give it time, dear sweet mama, give it time!
If you want to keep your sanity, scheduling mommy me time is definitely something you need to do!
I know finding time for yourself can be tough, especially if your kids are very young.
But trust me, and I’m speaking from experience here, occasionally putting yourself first is something you must do for your own mental health and well being.
Your happiness is important, period. And yes, we love our children and would do anything for them. But mama, you need to take a break! And that’s not only okay, it’s healthy.
You might be thinking to yourself “how am I supposed to not only find Me Time but what am I going to do once I get it?”
Well my friend, I’m glad you asked!
It will take some work, no question about it.
But I’m here to help you figure things out so that you can design your life to include that elusive me time.
You need to be able to put yourself first , and that includes setting boundaries that protect this time for yourself just the same way you would protect your time in any other relationship you have.
How to Find Me Time as a Mom
Have a Family Member Watch The Kids
If you’re fortunate enough to live near your sister, cousin, parents, in laws, or any other trusted family member, see if they’d be willing to have scheduled time with your kids.
Whether it’s once a week, once a month, or every couple of months, making it a regular occurrence will make certain you get the time you need. Plus it will give them quality time with your precious little ones.
Trade Babysitting With Friends or Neighbors
Swapping babysitting with trusted friends and neighbors with kids of their own is a great way to get that me time.
I recommend sitting down and making out a schedule that works for all parties involved. Yes unexpected things do come up on occasion, but the last thing you want is a situation where services aren’t being reciprocated. Make sure the days and times work for everyone ahead of time before you even start.
Leave the Kids With Daddy
Notice I didn’t say “let daddy babysit?”
Because when daddy has the kids, it’s not called babysitting!
Take a couple hours on hubby’s day off to get out and do something yourself.
Trust me, he can do this.
You might even be surprised how well he does when you’re gone.
Let the Older Kids Help Out
Have teenagers as well as toddlers in the home?
Use it to your advantage, mama!
Teenagers can babysit for short amounts of time (of course depending on maturity level, you know your child best).
Even if you don’t actually leave the house, let your older child watch a movie or play a game with your younger child, or rock the baby to sleep.
After all, I’m sure you do your best to get them where they need to go, am I right?
One hand washes the other.
You’re all family, and families help each other.
Hire Help
If it’s within your means to hire help, then do so.
Have a regular babysitter come and go out and remember what it’s like just being you.
Your peace of mind is worth the cost, trust me.
The Importance of Me Time
Yes, you will miss the kids if you’re able to get out of the house. I guarantee this.
But you know what?
You will return more relaxed, confident, and peaceful.
Scheduling regular alone time will make you a better mother.
You will be less resentful of your husband who likely gets out more than you do, especially if you’re a stay at home mom.
Getting away from it all actually makes you appreciate everything much more.
Not to mention the possible health benefits of taking time for yourself.
If you’re doing something like physical exercise, that’s a given.
But even getting mental clarity will affect your health too.
Being able to clear your mind and just think about things other than changing diapers and wiping noses.
Yes I know you love it! I did too! But you still need a break. Moms need time for themselves!
Mom Alone Time Ideas
Here are some ideas that I hope will help you take a break from being mom and just be ______________ (insert your name here, LOL) at least for a little while.
Now this might just be unnecessary here, because you’ve likely thought of a thousand things you’d want to go do if you ever had time alone.
But just in case you get a little free time and you draw a blank, I thought I’d share a few ideas for me time activities.
Get a Manicure or Pedicure
When’s the last time you were actually pampered? If you like painted fingernails (or haven’t had time to take care of your nails) take a little time to get this done.
I went for my very first pedicure in my 40s and oh my goodness, I loved it! Despite the fact that I don’t like my toes touched, ha ha!
I didn’t realize that they actually massage your feet and legs…it was wonderful! Something I definitely recommend.
Go to the Library and Read
Or any quiet place really, but out of the house. Dive into that book you’ve been putting off forever, because it’s hard to read a few sentences without interruption. Not to mention comprehend them with all the noise.
Go Shopping
Whether it’s Clothing, Home Decor or whatever makes you happy, scrolling the isles of your favorite store ALONE is a like a little piece of heaven. ( Not groceries! I repeat…doing your grocery shopping DOES NOT COUNT for me time!)
Have Coffee With a Friend
Coffee. Friend. Enough said.
Take a Family Member Out to Lunch
Can you remember the last time you went to lunch with your mom, sister, brother, Aunt? Enjoy good food and great conversation sans kids.
Take a Class
Remember those things you used to do before kids? What were they called, hobbies?
Consider taking a class- art, photography, pottery, jewelry making, or whatever you’re interested in.
If you don’t have a college nearby, check with your local chamber of commerce to see what’s available in your area.
More Me Time Ideas
Go For a Drive
I know I can’t be the only one who loves to blast the music and sing like a rock star when I’m alone.
Hit the road and have your own concert. Let the people driving by you stare. It’s okay. You’ve earned this!
See a Movie or Play
Head out to your local theater by yourself. No need to get popcorn or drink refills (that is, unless you want them!). Focus on the movie or performance, sit back and enjoy!
Take a Day Trip
Or as I like to call it, a mom vacation! Visit the lake, beach, or explore the next town over.
Whether you’re visiting one of your regular destinations or discovering somewhere new, traveling alone can be so much fun.
And it’s without a doubt relaxing. One of my favorite mom alone time ideas!
Go to a Concert
I mean other than the one you put on in your car! This will take some planning ahead but will be so worth it.
Look up who’s coming to your area and book those tickets, you won’t regret it!
If getting out of the house just isn’t possible, then you still need to find a way to make this me time thing work.
Here are some mommy alone time ideas, even when you’re at home with the kids.
Take Advantage of Naptime
When the baby and kids sleep, don’t put in a load of laundry or do the dishes.
Choose one of the following me time activities to do:
- Pick up that book you’ve been wanting to read.
- Make yourself a cup of coffee (or another one.)
- Put in ear buds and listen to your favorite music. Turn it up loud!
- Journal– get your thoughts out of your head and down on paper.
- Play a video game.
- Take part in your hobby (drawing, jewelry making, crafting, photography, etc.).
- Take a relaxing bath
- Do a little online shopping
I hope this post has given you a few Mom Alone Time Ideas and shown you How to Find Me Time.
Momming is hard work, and just like any other job, it’s okay to take a break. In the long run, having me time will make you a better mom.
